Admire

We grew up in different worlds, you and I. Not quite polar opposites, but different enough that we sometimes see the world in severely different ways. Let me ask you this: have you ever really felt like you admired someone for their personality, beliefs, and mind? Really admire – not like the secret admirer kind or the crushing kind. It’s not even the “burning with fiery infatuation” kind, but the kind that sits at the bottom of your heart most of the time – on occasion rising unexpectedly with intense fervor. It’s the type that makes you feel a deep respect for someone and for reasons that you might not have thought about.

Maybe it’s for the way they react and interact. The way they not only see the world but how they understand it and make sense of it. The way they leave an impression on you that cannot be erased, no matter what cleaning solution you throw at it – the way they incessantly haunt your thoughts like Casper the friendly ghost. Or for the way they love to think and aren’t afraid of how they’ll be perceived by the world. And in doing so, becomes your beacon of hope and the bravest warrior you’ve ever seen. They inspire you to fight the good fight and instill a sense of pride in you. I don’t know how, but when you really admire someone, you’re stronger for it. Haven’t you ever respected someone so much simply because they are who they are?

These thoughts have swirled in my mind for months, but I finally decided to dust them off and stop putting them off. Instead of archiving them in the recesses of my mind, I’m writing them down. Feelings and emotions are hard to get down into words, so I hope I did them justice. But here’s to you and that beautiful mind, not to mention your radiant soul. I’ll drink to that. Coffee, of course – black.
